Live de plus d'une heure au Musée Fenaille (Rodez)

The shadowy Thomas “Benoit Pioulard” Meluch contributed a chunk of loveliness to the gorgeous ‘Musique Pour Statues Menhirs’ compilation on Arbouse into which all sorts of ambient bignames stuck their oars - Fennesz, Rafael Anton Irisarri, Sylvain Chauveau, Jefre Cantu Ledesma, Greg Davis, Schneider TM, Melodium and Jasper TX to name but a few! Shortly afterwards, in 2010, he and the aforementioned JTX played a concert in the Fenaille Museum’s hall of statues-menhirs, surrounded by the mysterious monoliths which inspired the music.

Here, then, is a hushed and meditative live Benoit Pioulard performance, which drifts from sheets of warm drones to looped acoustic incantations, right through to more straightforward folk singing and graceful fingerpicked guitar. Fans of Meluch’s understated and unhurried melodic prettiness will no doubt be spellbound by this relaxing musical journey full of distant drone-laden longing mixed with the earthiness and physicality of the very saddest folk. It’s slow-drifting but in a cleansing, uplifting way, very relaxing. I like this.
